Walking Tall

Hello from the crazy house. In the last post, I reported that Sam and Max hadn’t started walking yet and that we even were limiting them from riding their push cars to encourage them to walk. Yeah… what were we thinking?! File that one under “be careful what you wish for.” They started out slow, but once they started they took off. They’re certainly walking now. It started one day when Max was standing at one side of the room and I was at the other, and I asked him to walk to me. He didn’t skip a beat and casually walked across the room and grabbed my hand. I asked if he wanted to walk back, and he simply nodded his head and started walking back before losing his balance at the half way point. I was so proud and impressed. After that, Sam started to get into the act, and now they’re both walking almost everywhere. I attribute this to a few things: their Mimi (Laura’s mom) and Laura were trying to get them to walk between them just about every night; every time we go to Aunt Colleen’s house they see their crazy cousins running wild; and about a week before they started walking, their Yaya (my mom) was visiting and was like a drill sergeant with the practice. So, now they’re officially walkers. We even see them running now and then. Once they get better at that, I think we’re officially screwed.

In other news, Max needed to get glasses. We noticed that his left eye started to cross every once in a while, and it got progressively worse as time went on. We took him for an eye appointment and were told that he has Accommodative Esotropia. He can see just fine, but is more far sighted than usual. It doesn’t require surgery, but can be corrected by wearing glasses with a prescription that will gradually get stronger as he grows to help him focus and keep his eye from crossing. Then, at some point, the prescription will gradually get weaker to wean him off the glasses. All of this could take several years, but we’re hoping that the end result will be a glasses-free Bean. In the mean time, his glasses make him look even more stinking cute than before. He reminds us of the little kid from the movie “Jerry McGuire”. This is fitting, as I have no doubt that Max will be telling random strangers what a human head weighs as soon as he can talk. The big challenge for us is to get a nineteen-month old boy to keep on his glasses. A bigger challenge is to keep his nineteen-month old brother from ripping them off his head. Surprisingly, they’re both pretty good about it, and it’s not as big of a task as you might think. For the most part, as long as Max is occupied with whatever he’s doing, he doesn’t give the glasses a second thought.
That’s what’s new in our lives. We continue to visit the neighborhood pool and generally try to keep cool in the southern summer heat. Every once in a while, when it’s a little cooler, we try to go on an outing to a local park to let the boys burn off some energy. Other than that, it’s pretty status quo. Now that summer is winding down and as it starts to cool down a bit, I’m sure we’ll be going on more adventures. Until then, stay cool!
Hi George and Laura,
I just loved every minute that it took me to read about the boys’ update. I can not tell you how very much I enjoyed it. I am so happy for all of you. The boys are soooooooo adorable. Make sure your battery is well charged, George, now that the boys are walking. Maybe, George, you should even consider buying Laura a pair of roller skates to help her keep up with them. HA! HA!
Our Kathleen has started crawling. I told her I was going to put a dust cloth on each of her knees so she could wipes my floors. Not a bad idea, don’t you agree?
Well, please give the boys a hug and kiss from me. While you are at it, you could even give each other a kiss, too! Take care. Keep the updates coming.
My love to all, Ann
Enjoyed your update!! Always enjoy reading your comments about Sam & Max. Missed you all at the family picnic. Kids are getting big & new generation of babies are on the scene. Stay cool, and hope to see you all–perhaps the the boys are a little older. George, have the boys tried to press buttons on your chair?? They are so curious and so adorable!! Take care, Luv, Carol
So happy to hear from you, sounds par for the course. I know you are having a great time with the boys, what happy days, they are so very cute. Your mom tries to keep me up dated. I need to call her now about our trip to PA and Wyoming Valley. Someday we will visit you too.
Love,
Aunt Margaret
